Brief History Of Sterling Bank

Sterling Bank Plc in 1960 as Nigeria Acceptances Limited. They were licensed as the first merchant bank in Nigeria in 1969. Due to the 1972 indigenization decree, the Bank became 100% owned by govt.

It was then managed in partnership with American Express Bank Limited, Grindlays Bank Limited, and Continental International Finance Company Illinois between 1974 and 1992.

Back in 1992, some part of the bank was privatized, and it was listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange.

In the year 2000, the federal government of Nigeria sold its residual interest in the bank; this made the bank a fully privatized institution.

Due to Nigeria’s bank consolidation policy by the CBN in 2004, in 2006 NAL Bank merged with Magnum Trust Bank, Trust Bank of Africa, NBM Bank, and Indo-Nigeria Merchant Bank (INMB) and changed its name to Sterling Bank.

In 2011, Sterling Bank Plc acquired the franchise of Equatorial Trust Bank.
